Proton Precession Magnetometers

I have written a general description of the principles of operation of a proton precession magnetometer along with a discussion of the design of modern field instruments. This Adobe Acrobat document may be downloaded by clicking here (1.09 MB). The accompanying Excel spread-sheet is available by clicking here (27 KB). I have recently examined the configuration of a tall, cylindrical 'toroid'. For a brief discussion of this configuration, click here (32 KB). To understand this fully, you will need to read the first document referred to above. For the spreadsheet (ZIP'd) for this configuration, click here (7 KB).

I have also written a detailed description of a single sensor magnetometer based on the design principles described above. The Adobe Acrobat document may be downloaded by clicking here (33 KB). The accompanying figures of the circuit diagram are available in a .ZIP file, available by clicking here (272 KB).

I have also written a detailed description of field gradiometer. A photo of the control panel is shown here (672 KB), the Adobe Acrobat document describing the instrument is available by clicking here (38 KB) and the circuit diagrams are available as a .ZIP file by clicking here (129 KB).
