IS THERE A TURBINE IN YOUR FUTURE?

At Twenty First Century Books we believe there is. A very promising candidate to fill this position is found in the elegantly simple design of the Tesla engine, recognized by its set of flat disks which are mounted on a shaft and then installed within a cylindrical casing. When running, pressurized gases enter at the edge of the disks and cause rotation by flowing between them in free spiral paths, finally exiting through exhaust ports at their center. Instead of extracting the energy of the gas by its action on pistons, blades or vanes, the Tesla Engine depends upon the properties of adhesion and viscosity to achieve this result. The attraction of the gas to the faces of the disks and the slight thickness of the gas combine to transmit its energy to the disks and on to the shaft. If you would like to learn more about the Tesla turbine, a good starting point is the book The Tesla Bladeless Turbine & Related Turbomachinery.
