2. DOS with Microsoft QBASIC, Windows 3.1x, 95, 98 or NT, or the ability to write a program which will configure the computer's comms port and write characters to it. (The UPNLT must be initialised to the required comms settings each time it is powered up. To do this, the computer must send a string of bytes via the comms port.)
