Testing

Well you're almost done. We can now set up the receiver as if we were in the field. You must do the following procedures:

If you are testing the receiver indoors, you should hear a prominent hum from the power lines. If you hear a loud hum, your receiver works!

Now you can make the following tests:

If all of this checks out, you are ready to go out in the field to search for a quiet site. CONGRATULATIONS!

NOTE: If you have a monaural recorder, you will have noticed that the "MIC/RCVR" switch does not work as described above. If that is the case, you will have to modify your receiver to work in monaural only. The modification is simple and is described below.

Not all "stereo" cassette recorders use a true stereo microphone input. If yours does not, you will not hear the mic input in one ear and the receiver in the other when you move the "MIC/RCVR" switch to the "MIC" position. If this is the case, you will have to modify your receiver so that it records in monaural.

MONAURAL OPERATION MODIFICATION

1. Locate the short violet wire connecting the "MIC/RCVR" switch to the "RCVR OUT" jack.

2. CUT this wire near each end and remove.

Test the receiver. You should hear receiver output when the "MIC/RCVR" switch is in the "RCVR OUT" position. When you change the "MIC/RCVR" switch to the "MIC" position, you should hear microphone input.
