A Change for the Better

I also held a bitter grudge against many students from my high school,
where I was basically the wierd, nerdy kid who everyone enjoyed mocking.
I
was glad to be far away from there- at a place where people accepted me.
There was a certain peculiarness about my new friends, despite their
stance on basic moral issues. They were honest, true friends, who were
always there to help and give support. Even though I openly distanced
myself from their beliefs, they continued to accept me as a friend.
One night, my friend came into my room with his bible. I knew what was
going to happen, and I sighed, hoping for it to be a short encounter.
He began to explain to me from the bible how we are all sinners and are
headed for hell- a terrible place that 'he didn't want to see me go
to'. Although I knew I was a sinner, I was slightly offended by his
apparent assumption that I was going to hell. I told him how I was a
member of the church, how I had been confirmed, etc. He continued- pointing
out that despite all my sins, I could know for sure that I was going to
heaven. After reading me a few more verses, to my relief, he left. I
thought it was over.
However, late that December night, around 1:00 A.M., I couldn't get to
sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about what my friend told me. Finally,
I grabbed my coat, a flashlight, and a small tract he had given me
earlier and headed out the door. Many times I went for long walks on the
remote railroad tracks
outside of town. Now I was headed for the tracks on this cold, drizzly
night- I needed a quiet place to go and think. When I got about a mile
down the tracks, I stopped and sat on the rail, took out the tract and
flashlight, and began to read. After I read through the tract a few
times, I finally knelt down and prayed.
"Lord Jesus, I believe in my heart that you died for me. I know I'm a
sinner. Please forgive me for all the wrong things I've done in my
life. Please come into my heart and change me."
I didn't feel a great change right then and there, but I felt a uncanny
sense of relief- and peace. I walked back to my dorm room, not fully
realizing what had just taken place.
In the months that followed, my 'colorful' speech had faded away.
Strangely, I eventually no longer had a desire to listen to the immoral
music or other profane material. Whenever I did listen to them, I
felt like someone was telling me, "Why?".
Moreover, the bitterness I had for my high school enemies had faded
away. The Lord gave me courage and power to forgive something I thought
I'd never be able to forget.
I'd like to tell you about the most significant event in my life:
I was raised in a good home, with good parents. I often went to Sunday
school, church, youth group, and I was even confirmed as a member in the
church after making my personal statement of faith.
When I went to college, the freedom was a great new experience. I
quickly made friends with a couple of guys on my residence hall floor.
I began to notice something about them- they seemed to have
something different in their lives that made them stand out from others.
I dismissed their conservative and biblical loyalty as mere fanatacism,
and I distanced myself from all of their religious discussions, church
invitations, and the like. Like most young college students, my
language was not clean. I enjoyed listening all kinds of music- some of
which was not appropriate.
I know now that the reason I couldn't sleep that night is because God's Holy Spirit kept pulling on my heart. I didn't deserve for God to keep wooing me, but miraculously, He did.
I know now that when I prayed that crude but vital prayer on the railroad tracks, Jesus Christ moved into my heart and changed me forever. The bible calls it being 'born again' or 'saved', and without that change in your life you cannot go to heaven.
Now I am certain I have eternal life. I know and have seen how my life has been changed. It's no coincidence.
My question to you is- have you been saved? Remember, I was confirmed in a church, even a member, but I had not made the biblical choice that turned my life around. Church can't save you. Good deeds can't save you. Nothing but Jesus can save you and change you.
I don't want to see anyone suffer eternal punishment. The bible's description of eternal punishment is graphic and frightening. But the bible's description of eternal life is awesome- and it's so simple to obtain it!
Please think about what you've just read. You can read the very tract that helped guide me to the Lord by clicking here. My friend's name who had the courage and wisdom to tell me about Christ is John Starsick. If it were not for him taking the time to personally explain the gospel to me, my life would still be the same as it was then.
Thank you for reading this and I hope you enjoy The Lightning Page.

IntroductionThank you for stopping by! I have always been fascinated by lightning, and I have tried to learn as much as I can about this spectacular natural phenomenon (as an amateur (not professional!) lightning enthusiast). I am thankful for the opportunity I have by the grace of God to maintain a web site. Please keep me in your prayers, and pray that God will use this site as He wills. I hope you enjoy reading and learning from this page as much as I have enjoyed writing it! I have been studying lightning informally for about 8 years. A lot of what I have learned about lightning came from my own observations and experiences along with various books and articles. The most valuable written resource I have encountered is Dr. Martin A. Uman's book All About Lightning. I would reccomend it to anyone, lightning enthusiast or not, for basic and detailed information. For specifics on the book see the Reference List. It would be very difficult to document the information on this site since I am writing it entirely from memory from the information I have learned over the years. I do not intend to take credit for all of the information given, because many items have been discovered by researchers over the years, and are principles that are easy to learn and understand that I confirmed with my own observations and research. Therefore, if you use this site for a research source, please don't credit me for the information- find an additional source to back it up. I assure you that the information on this page is correct, but for documentation purposes I don't deserve credit for it. This site isn't intended to be a source of income, so for legal and moral purposes The Lightning Page will remain a free source of general lightning information. |
