A Simple Quasi-Transient accurate 2nd Order Crossover
< Back
The document available here for download is based on work I initially did back in 1978 in an effort to develop a simple, near transient perfect 2nd order crossover. I have revisited this approach and formalized the analysis. The result of the analysis yield simple design rules that allow the construction of what I refer to as quasi-transient accurate 2nd order crossovers. In the design example, the resulting crossover exhibits an amplittude response of better than +0/-1.5 dB across the frequency band and a corrisponding minimum phase response with better the +/-5 degrees variation form the ideal zero degree phase. When correctly designed and implimented, the crossover provides better protection for the tweeter than a standard 1st order crossover. Additionally, due to the steeper roll off rates it is easier to impliment with typical real world drivers. In applying the design to real systems, the developed filter response characteristics, amplitude and phase, must be used as the target acoustic response functions for the crossover. The drivers must also be mounted on a sloped or stepped baffle. The crossover is much simpler to impliment that my 2nd order, truely  transient perfect crossover or the 3-way, B&O filler driver approach. The document isa ZIPPED  MS Word 97 format and is about 75K. Download document.
