Transient Perfect 2nd O Crossover
I have put together a paper on the design of transient perfect second order crossovers. This class of crossover has symmetric high-pass and low-pass filter sections. The roll off rates are second order. The filters sum to a non-flat, minimum phase response which is then equalized, using a simple passive equalization network which is also a minimum phase network. The final response is flat with no phase shift. Application to real speaker designs is also discussed. I will be implimenting this type of crossover in my Y2K MTM design. The paper is available for down load. It is in Microsoft word 97 format, approximately 630K. If you use the design, please let me know how you make out. Downlaod paper (630k) (Appears in the May 2001 issue of AudioXpress magazine) As of Aptil 5, 2000 I have added some measurements of a priliminary speaker design. You may wish to take a look at what can be done. Measurements >>> Download new active filter design guide and Excel design spreadsheet |

The figure to the left is an experimental measurement of the response of a breadboarded 1 K Hz version of the crossover discussed in the paper. The figure shows the input 500 Hz square wave, the outputs of the HP and LP filter sections, and the summed response. This crossover was not critically tuned. Parts bin parts with 5% tolerances were used. Component values were the closest standard values.
