Welborne Labs, Old Colony Sound Labs, and Sonic Frontiers all carry driver boards that use everything from 5751's to 6DJ8's. Not only will you be using tubes that are more readily available, but you will be ridding yourself of a tube that, well, sucks. The 7199 was really a lousy tube, especially when compared to 5751's or 6DJ8's. You will really improve the sound of the ST-70 by replacing the driver circuitry with one that utilizes better tubes. -Derek ------------------------------ From: david.suess@medtronic.com (David Suess) Subject: Re: 7199 tubes Date: 6 Dec 1993 22:43:51 GMT Aaron Kremer (sage@netcom.com) wrote: : Can someone verify this? Anyone know of : a source for NOS 7199's? Don't know much about the Crown RR deck, but it should be a simple matter to reqire the tube sockets to accept either the 6GH8A or the 6U8A. Note that both of these tubes have the same pinout, but slightly different charasterics. The main difference between them and the 7199 is availability. If anyone is interested, I can/will post the tube pinout modifications to accomplish this. +---------------------------------------------------------------------+ david suess (david.suess@medtronic.com) medtronic. inc. The 7199 was specifically designed for AUDIO! The RCA I'll verify this. My RCA recieving tube book mentions that it is particularly designed to be quiet for audio use. My experiences aren't that positive though, the triode barely has enough voltage swing to be a good phase splitter, which is what it's marketed (was marketed) for. It was supposedly a HiFi amp tube, pentode input stage and triode splitter in one package. I once built an amp using it and a pair of 7868's. It worked. It was out of an old rec. tube handbook, and it had mega-problems with the stupid cathode bias it used for the output stage as well. I still have this huge, wonderful old T-M output transformer it used. -- Copyright alice!jj 1993, all rights reserved, except transmission by USENET and like facilities granted.
