Tom,

Here's an old file (mostly Shankar's with some minor additions) I had
lying around.

This is a reply to a posting by Kurt Strain, asking for parts sources.
I have lost the original article. Rec articles disappear quickly here.

It is of ABSOLUTELY no interest to non-builders, so skip now, or face
another 200 lines.

In most cases, you will need more than one catalogue, particularly if you
build from scratch, as against modifying existing components.

Sorry this is so long, but the detail may prove useful to some.

The places from which I buy most of my parts are, in no particular order :

1. Old Colony Sound Labs
   PO Box 243
   Peterborough, NH 03458 (603) 924-6371 (9-4, M-F)

Corning and Resista resistors, Wima and Flable (?) polypropylene
capacitors. Both are in rectangular packages, with short leads, perfect
for pcb's, particularly if you lay them out and etch them yourself, less
convenient for placing across power caps, i.e. you have to do the work
of attaching longer leads. The Wimas are compact, and I have been quite
happy with them.

OCSL sells pcb's, parts, and full kits, for a wide range of projects from
Audio Amateur and Speaker Builder.

They have decent prices on resistors and capacitors, miserable prices on
semiconductors. However, full kits seem not unreasonably priced, i.e. the
markup on semiconductors seems to be less in kits.

They charge no shipping, in most cases, except for some massively heavy
items, like class A amp kits with multi-ton transformers.

Service is spectacularly good, and almost any problem can be resolved over
the telephone. However, they won't take resistor and capacitor orders over
the telephone, as a matter of policy, to avoid misspecification. Also, it
is a good idea to avoid giving them separate shipping and mailing
addresses; they seem to have trouble with that. If these caveats seem to
compromise my claim that service is extraordinary, I deny that. Experience
will make a believer of anyone.

2. Audio Concepts
   901 S. 4th Street
   La Crosse, WI 54601 (608) 784-4570

Wonder Caps, Chateauroux caps (reasonably priced for large value polyprops)
loudspeaker parts and kits. Well-informed people, even if they do cater to
the fringe lunatic to some small extent (like sixty-zillion-dollar-an-ounce
Wonder Solder; I can understand paying for decent 63/37 eutectic stuff
instead of 60/40, but there are limits ....). But I don't blame them for
market realities. If people want it, etc.

The Chateauroux caps have long, flexible leads, and are physically fairly
large. Pcb use would require supports. Good value, though.

3. Madisound Speaker Components
   8608 University Green
   Madison, WI 53711 (608) 831-3433

Sidereal capacitors, speaker components.
I have not used the Sidereals, but many people swear by them.

4. Precision Audio Supply
   Box 96
   Downey, CA 90241 (213) 869-6804

Does anyone know if they are still around? I have not had luck recently
calling them. If they are still in business, they are an excellent source
of close tolerance polystyrenes, and lots of polypropylenes, and of some
tube related stuff.

An update on a recent posting :

Precision Audio Supply
PO Box 96
Downey, CA 90241

(213) 869-6804 (10:30-4, PST, closed on Wednesdays)

These people are still around; I spoke to them today.

PAS is the best place I know of for small polystyrene and polypropylene
capacitors, including 1% and 2% tolerance items. Rather comprehensive.

They also sell other stuff, of rather high quality. Good place.

5. Newark Electronics
Headquarters in Chicago, I believe, at (312) 784-5100. Offices
   everywhere.

Complete line of Motorola, TI, etc. Your basic general purpose electronics
distributor. Minimum order of $25 for credit card purchases. Ask for a
catalogue if you don't already have one. Vastly useful.

They don't seem to sell National Semiconductor devices. Pity. I need some
yesterday - I think I've blown some fets.

6. Digi-Key Corporation
   701 Brooks Ave. South
   PO Box 677
   Thief River Falls, MN 56701 (800) 344-4539

Good source for capacitors, resistors, diodes, commonplace semiconductors.
Not comprehensive, but prices are reasonable. They sell a good line of
Panasonic electrolytics. Every builder needs their catalogue.

7. Mouser Electronics
   PO Box 699
   Mansfield, TX 76063 (800) 346-6873

Reasonable selection of items, with odd blank spots. Terrific source of
reasonably priced non-sexy items, like the hardware to put a project
together. One does need more than polypropylene capacitors and metal film
resistors. Want a gold-plated TO3 socket? About a buck. You have to watch
out for their tendency to send stuff in small batches, as they become
available, and to charge you for each shipment. Check availability in
advance, or shipping costs will surprise you.

Then there are places which specialize in Japanese devices like the Toshiba
and Hitachi fets and MOSFETS.

8. Ora Electronics
   20120 Plummer St.
   PO Box 4029
   Chatsworth, CA 91313

9. East Coast Transistor
   2 Marlborough Road
   W. Hempstead, NY 11552 (516) 483-0388

Ora and East Coast carry the Japanese fets which have seen wide use of late;
2SK, 2SJ, 2SA, 2SB, 2SD, etc. Getting data sheets is another matter.

Hitachi's semiconductor division is at (800) 262-1502, or possibly
(201) 262-1502. They can refer you to a representative, who can refer you
to a distributor. Ask the representative for a copy of Hitachi's Power
Mosfet Data Book, publication D11. You may also be able to get this from
Hitachi's literature people, but it may be more trouble than you expect.
Unless you know EXCATLY what you need, and I don't, it is very hard to get
the Japanese semiconductor manufacturers to get data books to you. Most are
set up in the USA as consumer electronics companies, not device
manufacturers, and I have had to persuade them that they do, in fact, make
the devices in which I have been interested.

10. GSI Musical Electronics
    228 Washington Ave
    Belleville, NJ 07109 (201) 751-7505 (11-6, M-F)

Tube related stuff, but I don't know much about their range of stuff. High
voltage caps should be available. They are big on Dyna ST-70's. They supply
a fair range of good tubes, I believe, and assorted amps and preamps of
their own design.

For the remaining places I don't have addresses handy, but others will:

11. The Tweak Shop

They cater to the fringe lunatics, with fancy cable, connectors, etc.,
in addition to good caps and resistors. I saw a catalog once. If you
look carefully, you can probably find useful stuff from a builder's
point of view. Pricey.

There are other places like the Tweak Shop, and I expect others on the net
know about them. They are all outside my price range, and I have not dealt
with any of them.

12. Douglas Kent Smith Consulting (or some such name).

He provides high-quality tubes and assorted technical information on their
use. I don't know any more.

13. Audio Research Corporation
    Minneapolis, MN

They are in the book, obviously. They will sell parts at not terrible
prices, and are obviously a good source of parts for tube projects. I
believe they will sell you anything except their output transformers and
their analog-modules, whatever the hell those are. They sell noise selected
tubes, matched pairs, and so on.

14. Stereo Cost Cutters

They bought out the entire Dynaco stock, and are the principal source of
parts for them, including the output transfromer for the ST-70.
However, since you can buy a used ST-70 for about the price of the
transformers, I am not sure how good a deal they represent. Still, if you
are into Dynaco, their supply of parts and manuals is invaluable.

Finally, there are a few surplus places, which are worth exploring. Their
stock is often odd, and very erratic, but I have picked up various valuable
items for very little. Of course, when you include the junk I acquired, the
average cost may or may not be a whole lot lower than usual :

Star Tronics (I picked up single-deck Alps pots for $3.50 each)
BNF
All Electronics Corporation (very useful source of electrolytics, hardware,
                             relays)

I have not dealt with these places in some time, and I don't know if they
are still around. I expect they are.

And, absolutely finally :
   Elcon Sales
   470 Clifton Avenue
   Clifton, NJ 07011

is an apparently mom-and-pop manufacturing operation which makes capacitors
for the defense industry, including polypropylenes. They maintain something
called an "off-price line" or some such thing, which consists of caps which
are out of spec in some trivial way, like being 21% off nominal value and
so on, which they sell for much less than list. For bypass use and so on it
obviously does not matter. They have a strong tendency to use copper-clad
steel leads, if you are concerned about that sort of thing.

If you receive useful e-mail responses, please post. I am sure we builders
would love a comprehensive list.

Subject: list of parts sources
Status: R

Since I don't wish to take up your time entirely, I would be willing to edit
this down to sensible proportions if you like. But that will ake me a week or
so.

Anyway, if you wnat to deal with editing it yourself, feel free to do
whatever you want. I have no intellectual obsessions about what you deem
appropriate for such a list.

Here goes:

===========================================================================

This list of sources for parts is compiled from my own list of sources, and
from contributions from Bill Spencer, Len Moskowitz, John Allen,
Bob Sluggs, and probably others on the net. I apologize to anyone whose
contribution I have failed to acknowledge.

                          *****************

Service is good, in my experience, although others have reported problems.

However, they won't take resistor and capacitor orders over the telephone,
as a matter of policy, to avoid misspecification.

It is a good idea to avoid giving them separate shipping and mailing
addresses; they seem to have trouble with that.

                         (10:30-4, PST, closed on Wednesdays)

PAS is the best place I know of for small polystyrene and polypropylene
capacitors, including 1% and 2% tolerance items. Rather comprehensive.
4.7 pF to 15 uF film types.

They also sell other stuff, of rather high quality, including parts for
tube projects. Good place. Good selection of pots, too.

   Audio Concepts
   901 S. 4th Street
   La Crosse, WI 54601 (608) 784-4570

Wonder Caps, Chateauroux caps (reasonably priced for large value polyprops)
loudspeaker parts and kits. Well-informed people, with excellent products.
They sell a few lunatic fringe items, (like sixty-zillion-dollar-an-ounce
Wonder Solder; I can understand paying for decent 63/37 eutectic stuff
instead of 60/40, but there are limits ....). But that is not
representative of what they do. They are pragmatic people, with a good line
of products, and one can buy a design manual for any of their speakers for
a reasonable price.

The Chateauroux caps have long, flexible leads, and are physically fairly
large. Pcb use would require supports. Good value, though. I use them
freely in power supplies.

   Newark Electronics
Headquarters in Chicago, I believe, at (312) 784-5100. Offices
   everywhere.

Complete line of Motorola, TI, etc. Your basic general purpose electronics
distributor. Minimum order of $25 for credit card purchases. Ask for a
catalogue if you don't already have one.

They don't seem to sell National Semiconductor devices. Pity. The National
LM334 and 336 are useful devices, as are many others.

                          *****************

   Digi-Key Corporation
   701 Brooks Ave. South
   PO Box 677
   Thief River Falls, MN 56701 (800) 344-4539

Good source for capacitors, resistors, diodes, commonplace semiconductors.
Not comprehensive, but prices are reasonable. They sell a good line of
Panasonic electrolytics. Every builder needs their catalogue.

                          *****************

   Mouser Electronics
   PO Box 699
   Mansfield, TX 76063 (800) 346-6873

Reasonable selection of items, with odd blank spots. Terrific source of
reasonably priced non-sexy items, like the hardware to put a project
together. One does need more than polypropylene capacitors and metal film
resistors. Want a gold-plated TO3 socket? About a buck. You have to watch
out for their tendency to send stuff in small batches, as they become
available, and to charge you for each shipment. Check availability in
advance, or shipping costs will surprise you.

                          *****************

Then there are places which specialize in Japanese devices like the Toshiba
and Hitachi fets and MOSFETS.

    Ora Electronics
    20120 Plummer St.
    PO Box 4029
    Chatsworth, CA 91313

    East Coast Transistor
    2 Marlborough Road
    W. Hempstead, NY 11552 (516) 483-0388

Ora and East Coast carry the Japanese fets which have seen wide use of late;

Unless you know EXACTLY what you need, and I don't, it is very hard to get
the Japanese semiconductor manufacturers to get data books to you. Most are
set up in the USA as consumer electronics companies, not device
manufacturers, and I have had to persuade them that they do, in fact, make
the devices in which I have been interested.

                          *****************

    GSI Musical Electronics
    228 Washington Ave
    Belleville, NJ 07109 (201) 751-7505 (11-6, M-F)

Tube related items, but I don't know much about their range of stuff. High
voltage caps should be available. They are big on Dyna ST-70's. They supply
a fair range of good tubes, I believe, and assorted amps and preamps of
their own design.

                          *****************

The Tweak Shop I don't have an address

They cater to the fringe lunatics, with fancy cable, connectors, etc.,
in addition to good caps and resistors. I saw a catalog once. If you
look carefully, you can probably find useful stuff from a builder's
point of view. Pricey.

There are other places like the Tweak Shop, and I expect others on the net
know about them. They are all outside my price range, and I have not dealt
with any of them.

                          *****************

Douglas Kent Smith Consulting (or some such name).

He provides high-quality tubes and assorted technical information on their
use. I don't know any more.

                          *****************

    Audio Research Corporation
    Minneapolis, MN

They are in the book, obviously. They will sell parts at not terrible
prices, and are obviously a good source of parts for tube projects. I
believe they will sell you anything except their output transformers and
their analog-modules, whatever the hell those are. They sell noise selected
tubes, matched pairs, and so on.

                          *****************

    Stereo Cost Cutters

They bought out the entire Dynaco stock, and are the principal source of
parts for them, including the output transfromer for the ST-70.
However, since you can buy a used ST-70 for about the price of the
transformers, I am not sure how good a deal they represent. Still, if you
are into Dynaco, their supply of parts and manuals is invaluable.

                          *****************

There are a few surplus places, which are worth exploring. Their stock
is often odd, and very erratic, but I have picked up various valuable
items for very little. Of course, when you include the junk I acquired, the
average cost may or may not be a whole lot lower than usual :

Star Tronics (I picked up single-deck Alps pots for $3.50 each)
Occasionally they have good stuff, but it takes a lot of sorting.

Very useful source of electrolytics, hardware, relays. I have ordered
many useful items from them. Much better S/N than usual for surplus
places.

                                   (800)642-1123 for orders

Surplus parts, but much better organized than most surplus places. A fellow
called Geoff (Jeff?) knows a great deal about their stock.

I got Grayhill 2P3T rotary switches for $1.50 each, although these switches
require rather a lot of torque.	I also got Grayhill 2P6T switches for the
same price. The 2P6T look good for selectors. They are pc-mount, with the
terminals on one end so that they can be used on standard board patterns.

    Elcon Sales
    470 Clifton Avenue
    Clifton, NJ 07011

This appears to be a mom-and-pop manufacturing operation which makes capacitors
for the defense industry, including polypropylenes. They maintain something
called an "off-price line" or some such thing, which consists of caps which
are out of spec in some trivial way, like being 21% off nominal value,
which they sell for much less than list. For bypass use and other similar
purposes this obviously does not matter. They have a strong tendency to use
copper-clad steel leads, if you are concerned about that sort of thing.

This is not really a surplus place.

                              ******

    Marlin P. Jones & Assoc.
    PO Box 12685
    Lake Park, FL 33403 407-848-8236

Poor signal to noise, but they have some useful items. They have high
voltage supplies which should interest ESL builders. Also, quite often,
they have large electrolytics, useful for power supplies.

                              ******

    Herbach and Rademan
    401 E. Erie Avenue
    Philadelphia, PA 19134 215-426-1708

Closer to a useful, general purpose surplus place than most, including
some new stuff. They often have high voltage supplies and transformers
which are quite useful. The transformers are quite ordinary in quality.
Don't expect to find toroidal jobs.

but still have useful selections of IC's, etc. But the selection is rather
odd.

    Woodbridge, Ontario L4L 4X6
    Canada 416-856-2222

Reasonable range of enclosures with anodized aluminium front panels.
Enclosures are available in steel and in aluminium. Construction is OK for
preamps and similar things of limited weight. For heavier items, bracing is
necessary. My power amp is in a Sunix enclosure, but I bolted a sheet of
1/8" aluminium to the base. Without that it flexed unacceptably with the
transformers inside. But better enclosures cost a lot of money. A place
called Strongbox advertizes high quality enclosures, starting at about $170
each. The ads appear from time time in Audio Amateur.

    5 Old Town Park Road
    Unit 47
    New Milford, CT 06776 203-354-8597

Excellent source of toroidal transformers. Their Cotswold line has lots of
transformers which would work well in power amps. Good place. About $80 for
a 500 VA transformer.

I have used several Avel-Lindberg transformers over the years, and have
been very happy with the quality, and with the service.

Smaller transformers are somewhat expensive.

All transformers have dual primaries.

                          *****************

    Amecon
    1900 Chris Lane
    Anaheim, CA 91805 714-634-2220

Another excellent source of transformers. They have a possibly slightly
wider range of higher VA rating transformers than Avel-Lindberg. I gather
the quality is much the same.

Most transformers, maybe all, have dual primaries.

                          *****************

    ILP Manufacturing Inc.

    Downsview, Ontario M3J 2N5
    Canada 416-636-9418 I think

Old Colony sells ILP's, by and large. OCSL prices are quite high, compared
to Avel-Lindberg or Amecon, but I don't know if direct purchase from ILP or
a distributor would be cheaper.

As far as I know, the transformers have single primaries.

                          *****************

    American Design Components 201-941-5000

                                      800-338-0531

They sell loudspeaker drivers, hardware for loudspeakers, etc. I gather
from a posting on the network, that they also sell Hitachi MOSFETS,
although I gathered that these were slightly older devices. There are more
recent versions, of higher current capacity, but I don't have details on
what Parts Express offers.

I believe these people are the current incarnation of Stereo Cost Cutters.
They have the current supply of Dynaco parts, etc., and, inevitably, the
usual range of tube-related parts.

They sell a range of kits for preamps and power amps. The kits are very
inexpensive, and possibly too inexpensive to be of good quality. But it
might be worthwhile to get a catalogue.

They also sell power transformers (apparently no toroids), and enclosures.
The enclosures may be promising, mostly for reasons of cost.

Inexpensive oscilloscope probes. (That information came from John Allen at
ingr.com.)

I gather that they have other interesting stuff as well. If they have
tantalum caps at similarly attractive prices, I would be very happy

appealing prices), pots (ALPS at decent prices), output transformers
(usable, backwards, for esl's, perhaps), resistors, capacitors, etc. I'l
have to get a catalogue.
