------------------------------ From: 3eet@Jeff-Lab.QueensU.CA (Toma Elton E) Subject: RE: VINTAGE AMP ADVICE - HEATH W5M Date: Sun, 6 Feb 1994 17:02:41 GMT The Heath W5M use 12AU7's and 12AX7's in the driving stage and KT66's in the output. 6l6GC's or 5881 (military 6L6) should work. The advantage of the W5M is the mono-block configuration should provide better power supply control, possibly giving better stereo separation. I have one and would like another. I'm not sure of the value of these amps. Any comments on what a 35 year old tube amp which needs every resistor and capacitor replaced to sound good is worth? Angela Instruments seems to think they are worth 125 U.S. $ each. At the moment I don't... One last comment... Someone posted advice concerning mods to Citation II's, i.e. stick to the original design values. I totally agree, and to go one step further, I was advised to use carbon comp resistors only in the plate circuits of a Leak St-20 I,m rebiulding. This advice came from Haden Boardman in England, along with the advice to not alter the origanal design. The original designers of the time did not believe all amps sound alike and I think they went through great lengths to make their designs sound as good as possible. Elton Toma
