For our prototype we chose the ubiquitous LM386 which has proved reliable and robust in the past.
An alternative to this is the TDA7052 which offers an equally low component count, but with a bridge-tied load configuration. This has several advantages, especially for driving speakers in heterodyne detectors. As our detector was required to be suitable for making recordings a single-ended output was needed, so we chose the circuit shown above.
