PCB Designer is a design-on-the-fly electronic printed circuit board (PCB) design application that’s intended as a less-expensive, more nimble alternative to the full-blown professional electronic CAD platforms. The interface is as attractive as it is well-laid-out. On the left is a resizable panel that contains two drop-down menus -– one for components and one for symbols. On the right is the design grid, where you can place and easily move components within your layout. You can also add text captions and draw a variety of lines and shapes. Quickly change the view size of your drawing by selecting a zoom percentage from the drop-down list on top. You can also use multiple layers in your designs. We were a bit disappointed that tool and menu titles did not provide mouseover hints. Nevertheless, PCB Designer is a powerful yet agile design tool for hobbyists, students, or anyone who needs to design printed electronic circuit layouts. Help is included.
