HOW IT'S DONE

TEAM BAT participants are trained to develop four primary skills:
(1) optimum perception of their changing surroundings
(2) bicycle handling skills
(3) physical capapcity and endurance
(4) the ability to service and maintain their bicycles

New members typically receive a preliminary evaluation and consultation from Dan Kish prior to formal rides to determine fitness, perceptual functioning, and instructability. Then they are closely observed and monitored by TEAM BAT leaders: Dan Kish, Andy Griffin, and Janet Peterson. Additional instructions are given if necessary, and all questions are carefully addressed.

Each bicycle is fitted with a low volume clicker attached to the rear wheel to inform members of fellow riders. They generally ride in formation with sighted leaders positioned at the front and the rear of the group. The scoper rides at the head of the formation, blazing the trail and establishing a fixed auditory position. The spotter oversees the general formation from the rear, and pays particular attention to new riders.

Safety precautions cannot be over emphasized. Medical release forms must be signed. All riders are required to wear a protective SNELL or ANSI approved bicycle helmet, and appropriate clothing. On every outing, first aid supplies and cell phones are packed. In addition, special accomodations for individuals are addressed if necessary. Each rider must bring a supply of water and food to maintain sufficient energy and stamina for the trip.
