The National Cryptologic School (NCS) is offering a series of interagency TEMPEST courses for Fiscal Year 02. These courses are sponsored by the US Air Force and taught at building 4553, Ft. Meade, MD. Course schedules and descriptions follow.
Registrations will be handled by the NCS on a first come/first serve basis for both internal (NSA) and external customers. Nominations should be submitted at least 45 days prior to course start date and MUST include full name, SSN, DOB, POB, and clearance level. Applicants must be a US citizen and have a SECRET clearance. Course Descriptions
This is a three-day course intended for personnel who are new to the TEMPEST discipline and supervisors/managers who need a basic understanding of the phenomenon. Subjects include terminology familiarization, national policy guidelines, basic threat information, risk analysis/management, countermeasures assessments, and generic countermeasures application. This course is taught at the SECRET level.
Who Should Apply: Military or civilian personnel assigned or scheduled to be assigned duties requiring knowledge of TEMPEST related activities and information.
This course is focused on TEMPEST guidelines for installing systems and facility ground systems. It is intended for people involved with the design of systems (not specific equipment items), Certified TEMPEST Technical Authorities (CTTAs)/CTTAs in training), and system/equipment installers. The course may also be beneficial for personnel performing TEMPEST field-testing. It covers NSTISSAM TEMPEST/2-95 in depth, and also includes guidelines on grounding, shielded enclosures, and protected distribution systems. The course is taught at the SECRET level.
Who Should Apply: Applicants must have an understanding of electronics and simple communication principles, should have one year of TEMPEST testing or analyses experiences and have a working knowledge of algebra, logarithms, and scientific and engineering notations. Completion of TEMPEST Fundamentals is required.
This course is intended for personnel who are in positions requiring them to perform TEMPEST field tests, and Certified TEMPEST Technical Authorities (CTTAs) or CTTAs-in-training. The course covers basic field testing procedures as described in NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-93, shielded enclosure testing per NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-95, and facility zone testing according to NSTISSAM TEMPEST/2-92. Additionally, the course includes equipment radiation testing (walk-away tests), cross-talk testing and suggested procedures for using the spectrum analyzer in walk-away testing. The course is taught at the SECRET level.
Who Should Apply: Military and civilian personnel should be assigned, or scheduled to be assigned, duties involving TEMPEST testing. Working knowledge of oscilloscope and frequency generators is mandatory. Also students must have a working knowledge of algebra, logarithms, and scientific and engineering notations. Completion of TEMPEST Fundamentals (ND301) is required.
