Basic Countermeasures Equipment
2030 - CARRIER CURRENT DETECTOR/PROBE
Locates both carrier current and radio frequency (RF) devices which use the telephone or AC power lines for transmission. Six ranges cover from 10KHz to well over 1000 MHz. This is a detector module only and requires an external amplifier such as the 1059. The 2030 contains no battery and measures 1 x 3 x 4 inches.
The 2030 locates amplitude modulated (AM) or wide-band frequency modulated (WBFM) radio frequency (RF) or carrier-current transmitters using the AC power or telephone line as their power source and/or transmission media.
Carrier-current devices are generally effective only on the secondary side of a power transformer but their signals can travel considerable distances on telephone lines.
The unit consists of an input cord/antenna, a LINE REVERSE switch, an RF-CARRIER switch and a BAND selector switch. An external amplifier or preamplifier, such as the 1059, monitors the detected and/or demodulated output of the 2030. The input cord will withstand a maximum sustained DC or 50/60 Hz AC level of 500 volts. Telephone ring voltages are, of course r well below this limit. A carrier signal passes through the line cord to the LINE-REVERSE switch where it can be electrically reversed. The RF-CARRIER switch either connects one side of the line to chassis (case) common through an isolating capacitor (CARRIER position) or allows it to float (RF position).
OPERATION: Insert the 2030 output cable into an audio amplifier or preamplifier such as the 1059 (use J3). Adjust the amplifier for normal operation. With the RF-CARRIER switch in the CARRIER position, insert the line cord into each outlet in the search area. Listen carefully to the detected and/or demodulated signal in each of the six bands. Carrier-current transmitters generally occur at the lower frequency positions with RF transmitters at the upper. Throw the LINE REVERSE switch to the opposite position and again listen in each of the six bands. Remember, there are two sockets per outlet... check both.
Place the RF-CARRIER switch in the RF position and again check each socket in each of the six bands. It is not necessary to use the LINE REVERSE switch when testing for RF. Use a pair of clip leads to connect the 2030 plug to, and test, any telephone lines.
Always use extreme care when working with AC power lines.
* For detection and/or demodulation of narrow-band frequency modulated (NBFM) carrier-current transmitters use the SCD-5.
