1c. Art Winterbauer's whistler receiver

Art Winterbauer has built a version of the dual FET whistler receiver. He sent the following report of his first whistlers.

Well, last nite, I stopped by a park around 11pm, on my way home to Longmont from teaching an evening class in Denver. I set up the gear and around 11:30 or so (4/13) caught this whistler. I'd heard several others that evening but this was the strongest.

I recorded the sound from the rec. out jack on your receiver into an Optimus CTR-117 tape recorder (available at Radio Shack). The hi-pass filter was OFF, low-pass filter ON, and the 60-cycle trap ON. There's still some hum getting thru from park lights, but at least the mains are buried at this location. I used a ground rod, just a piece of 10-gage wire stuck into the ground with a thick braided strap from it hooked to the receiver with an alligator clip.

The location was Longmont, CO, about 40 miles north of Denver, around 11:20 PM MDST on 4/13/00. Since it was chilly, I ran headphones from the recorder's earphone jack into the car (ignition off). This way, I could hear what the recorder was hearing and stay out of the breeze.
