The ELFRAD Project
1999

Here you can see the construction of the 30 meter underground antenna
during the trenching and piping of the cable.
We used ex-military sectional earthing pins, these proved to be no use
for this sort of work, at least as far as long-term usage goes.
. Instead my friend and neighbour helped me to sink 2 x 2 lengths of copper pipe
5 meters long into the ground using water pressure. These were just pressed in
alongside the existing original army pipes. A brass plate with the
cable attached was soldered onto the pipe. The top was then covered with
half of a Spa bottle, the other half at the other end, the cable centers were soldered into place.
The braid in this case is not used. Aligned exactly Magnetic North/ South, the job is
now complete. The Metraterr meter measures a fairly stable 25 Ohms..! at the
ends of the cable in the workshop.

Here is the North hole, with the cable attached and the cover over the top of the
earth pin.  Although the 30 meter long cable hole may not have been too straight
the 2 holes are exactly aligned North/South.

The left is the Northern hole, right the Southern.
In the center of this line the pipe goes off at right angles to the left  (from
the South ) and transverses the garden to the back of the house all underground.
I figured once it is there, it will be invisible in a week or so, and there
is also the possibility of pulling more cables to the end of the garden.
Check out the ELFRAD site for the whole story and why someone
should be fired up to do all this....
