19" RACK information

Your equipment faceplate is 19" wide - that does not mean the inside of your rack will be 19". It depends on the type of rail you use. Many pretapped steel rails require the inside rack dimension to be 19.25" wide. When mounted on the inside, that dimension will allow the holes in your 19" faceplate to match up (left-right).

Vertical measurements are based on a standard rack space = 1.75" per space.

1 space (vertical) = 1.75"
2 space = 3.50"
3 space = 5.25"
4 space = 7.00"
10 space = 17.50"
You will need extra space at the top and bottom of the rack if you plan to include any type of lid stops for the covers.

It's a non-constant vertical spacing between the holes as well. The AES convention. It's at home, but I'll try to remember to bring it in and read off the spacing to you. The horizontal width is exactly 19", no extra 1/4" to play with (there would be 1/8" allowable slop on either side of the 19", is that what you meant?). Personnly, I'd buy the rails rather than use a tap-and-die to cut the holes.

If you read my previous post before it got disappeared, ignore it. Brain was on sabbatical during composition. This is correct info.

Holes are tapped 10-32. 3 holes, 5/8 inch apart center to center. Groups of holes 1/2 inch apart center to center. 1-3/4 inch rack module dividing line is between the 1/2 inch spaced holes. Original WECO telephone racks do not have the center hole of each group of three. Some modern equipment will not mount on old WECO racks.

Obviously not to scale

It becomes weird science if you build the walls 19-1/4" apart and then try to use commercial rack rails. No more than 19-1/8" (and no less than 19"), and absolutely square, or else the rack screws will start stripping against the sides of those little oval holes in the panels.
