CURRICULUM MORPHING PROJECT

COURSE 6, MODULE 4: WINDOWS

GENERAL COMMENTS

Leno Pedrotti-1

Student should have access to standard catalogs containing information on optical components. These catalogs—from manufacturers such as Edmund Scientific, Melles Griot and Newford, to name but a few—contain a wealth of information, with detailed specifications and costs. A familiarity with these catalogs should be a part of the eudcation of all photonics technicians.

Many experienced photonics instructors in the field make extensive use of vendor catalogs to introduce their students to the latest in component supports. Exceelent photographs and specifications for a variety of supports are readily availale in catalogs from such vendors as Meller Griot and newport. You are encouraged to acquaint your students with the wealth of information available in such publications.

The following material on mechanical distortion is fairly quantitative. You may decide to give it a light overview and treat it as "reference material" to be used when needed.

A new kind of electro-optical "erector set"—OPTOFORM—developed to acquaint students with component supports and how they work is available from AF Optical Company, 17962 Sky Park Circle, Suite A, Irvene, CA 92614, (www.afoptical.com). The OPTOFORM kit helps students visualize different uses of component supports in diverse optical assemblies.
