Laser Methane Detector

Instantaneous Detection of Invisible Gas

OBJECTIVE
Instantaneous detection of gas leakage, or highly sensitive measurement of environmental trace gases

PRESENT STATUS
  • Sensitivity : 50 ppb (absorption pathlength:1m, time constant:1 sec)
  • High speed leakage survey by a vehicle mounted system (Fig. 1)
  • Collaboration with Anritsu Co.

PRINCIPLE
  • Utilizing a diode laser developed for optical communications (Wavelength for methane detection : 1.6micron)
  • Frequency modulation method for high sensitivity measurement (Fig.2)
  • Stabilization of the laser wavelength on an absorption line for continuous measurement)
  • Coupled with optical fibers

APPLICATION
  • Portable scanning leakage detector utilizing scattered light
  • Multi-gas detection (methane, acetylene, ammonia, water vapor, etc.)
  • Environment measurements (precise measurement of trace gases in atmosphere)
  • Temperature, pressure measurements
  • Others
