TDR MEASUREMENT OF BRIDGE PIER DEGRADATION
January 1995

Slides taken by Charlie Pierce

  • SLIDE NO. 1. Two 1/2 inch diameter, coaxial cables were selected for column installation. A smooth aluminum outer conducting cable is shown on the left; a corrugated copper outer conducting cable is shown on the right.

  • SLIDE NO. 2. Full view of base beam length (12 feet) showing steel dowel reinforcement for two columns.

  • SLIDE NO. 3. Coaxial cables were painted before installation to protect metal during concrete curing.

  • SLIDE NO. 4. Corrugated copper cables were placed vertically along dowel reinforcement. Cable ends were sealed with plastic tips.

  • SLIDE NO. 5. Cables are bent in a smooth, 90 degree arc inside the reinforced base beam to create a perpendicular exit from the form.

  • SLIDE NO. 6. Two cables exiting beam at right angles; cable monitoring will be conducted from these exposed ends.

  • SLIDE NO. 7. Closeup view of two cables attached to steel reinforcement for one column.

  • SLIDE NO. 8. Lengthwise view of beam reinforcement showing installed cables.

  • SLIDE NO. 9. After first beam was cast in concrete, forms are removed, showing exposed cables.

  • SLIDE NO. 10. Finally, a full view of the concrete beam with the dowel reinforcement and coaxial cables exposed.
