Horizontal bar

The DCF77 is a long wave emitter situated in Mainflingen near Frankfurt am Mein (Germany, 50.02° North, 9.00° West) that emits time signals on 77.5kHz with a power of 50kW and can be received in a radius of about 1500..2500km (about the central Europe as shown in the picture). This signal (and its carrier) is derived from a cesium-clock situated in Braunschweig (Germany) with a better precision than 1 second over 300,000 years.

Approx. coverage of the DCF77 transmitter

The transmitted time is the CET (Central European Time) and DST (Daylight Savings) is also added in summer.

The frequency of the signal is in the long waves: this ensures that reflections can be neglected and that the signal arrives by a unique path: the surface wave. The reception is possible 24 hours a day.

The time station address is:

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
Laboratorium 4.41, Bundesallee 100
38116 Braunschweig
